Designing a Closet

Make the Most from a Small Space

Small closets can definitely be a challenge. With some careful thought and planning, you can end up with a closet that holds a lot and is functional, too!

Front and center is a rod that holds all of the clothes that go on hangers. When shopping for hangers, look for slim ones that have a non-slip material. With slim hangers, you can fit more clothes on the rod. The non-slip material will keep clothes from slipping off the hangers.

Below the rod is a section for drawers. This is efficient because the drawer width can be as wide as the rod area. The drawers can hold sweaters and other clothing that can be folded.

On either side of the rod section, put open shelving. This will give you a floor to ceiling area that will allow you to quickly find what you need. Use bins on the shelves that are labeled if you’d rather have a cleaner look.

If there is space, install one or more shelves the width of the closet above the rod area. These shelves could hold off-season clothing. Labeled baskets or bins will help keep this section organized and looking neat and tidy. The fabric drawers/bins available at Target or Home Depot work really well for this and come in several different colors. They are affordable, too! If needed, a small step stool nearby allows you to easily reach the higher shelves.

Hang a mirror on the inside of the closet door. An over-the-door hook holds tomorrow’s outfit!
