Prepare for your new closet system

So you’ve got the date on the calendar, and now it’s time to prepare your closet (or closets) for the upcoming installation. Here are some ideas to make the new closet system installation go more quickly and smoothly.

Empty out your closet. The installer will want to get straight to work, so it’s a good idea to have everything out of the way. Remove all of your clothing, shoes, and other items.  You can refer to our earlier post with tips about getting rid of unwanted or unnecessary items. This would be the perfect time to do that. Remove shelves, brackets, and rods.

Clean the closet. Vacuum the carpet or mop the floor, clean shoe marks from the walls, dust the baseboards, and clean the lighting fixture and switch.

If you are thinking about painting the walls, you should do so about one week in advance so that paint can dry and cure completely. It’s a good idea to paint before the installation, rather than try to paint after.

Make sure there is adequate work area for the installer. You may want to move any furniture or decor that is along the path that the installer will be using to come in and out. Also, you may want to remove any pictures that are on nearby walls in case the vibration from the electric tools or hammering that might cause them to fall. Remove any breakables in the immediate area.

A few other ideas for preparing for the closet installation are to shop in advance for any accessories you may want to have in your closet, such as a mirror, step stool, or small items of decor. If you are low on hangers, it might be time to buy new ones to replace all of the old mis-matched ones. If you store comforters or other bedding items, it might be a good time to take them to the cleaners for a refresh. Same goes for any clothing items that need dry cleaning. Last, organize your items so that when the closet is finished, you can fill it right away!
