too much stuff in closets

Have you ever cleaned out a closet and been surprised at how many items you actually store in there? It made me wonder just how many items are in the average house. How many items do we store in our homes and how does it all fit? Do we really have too much stuff? Can we organize it better?

According to BecomingMinimalist.com, the average American home has over 300,000 items! Here are more statistics from their site:

  • 1 out of every 10 Americans rent space in a storage facility.
  • The average American woman has thirty outfits; one for each day of the month. In 1930, women had nine.
  • During our lifetime, we will spend 3,680 hours or 153 days searching for misplaced items, up to nine items every day, or a total of 198,743 in a lifetime. Phones, keys, sunglasses, and paperwork are at the top the list.

BusinessWire.com has an article that says the average American household spent over $3,100 for 50 unused items that they have in their home.
